FREQUENTLY ASKED                    QUESTIONS

DO YOU GROOM ALL BREEDS OF DOG?

Yes, I am qualified and equipped to groom dogs of all sizes, breeds and coat types.

WHAT IS THE BEST AGE TO START HAVING MY DOG GROOMED?

From 12-14 weeks, as soon as your dog's puppy vaccinations have taken effect, they can come to the salon for a Puppy Pamper to introduce them to the sights, sounds and experience of being professionally groomed. The sooner your puppy is exposed to the grooming process the sooner they can learn what to expect and will come to accept and enjoy being groomed.

CAN I STAY WHILST MY DOG IS BEING GROOMED?

We understand that you may want to stay with your dog if you feel that they will be anxious about being groomed. However, an anxious dog will usually calm down and be more cooperative once the owner has left the salon as they are able to concentrate on the groomer one-to-one. The presence of the owner can be more of a distraction to the dog and can make the process more stressful for the dog and more difficult for the groomer.

DO I NEED TO BRING ANYTHING WITH ME?

Please bring your dog with their collar and lead and ensure that they have toileted before they arrive. If you would like to bring some of their favourite treats with them that is fine and for puppies or nervous dogs a special toy can help them to settle in.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I BRING MY DOG TO BE PROFESSIONALLY GROOMED?

Dogs of all breeds and coat types will benefit from a professional groom every 4 - 12 weeks. Some may need regular clipping and styling throughout their lives whilst for others a regular bath and brush out or a de-shed are beneficial. Please take a look at our recommended grooming schedule for the different breeds, or please get in touch for further advice. Professional groomers not only look after the dog's coat, skin and nails but also clean ears and eyes, check teeth and gum health and can detect any lumps, bumps or other health concerns which may need vet referral.

MY OLDER DOG HAS NEVER BEEN TO A PROFESSIONAL GROOMING SALON BEFORE, CAN I BRING HIM TO BE GROOMED?

Yes. Ideally, visits to the grooming salon should start as early as possible in a dog's life, however, it's never too late to begin a professional grooming routine. They say 'you can't teach an old dog new tricks' but in my experience you certainly can. I have groomed many older dogs that had never been to a grooming salon before and they have settled very quickly and taken the whole experience in their stride, relaxed and enjoyed being pampered. I always take things slowly, gently introducing each element of the grooming process as I would for a puppy introduction. This way, the dog has a chance to become accustomed to  the sights and sounds of the salon and learn what to expect during the grooming experience.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I GROOM MY DOG AT HOME?

Home grooming requirement depend upon breed and coat type for example an Afghan in full coat would require daily brushing whereas for a short coated breed such as a labrador, a weekly brush would be sufficient. As well as coat care, it is important to check nails, ears and eyes regularly too as well as looking out for any new lumps or bumps which may be of concern.

Regular home grooming is important to monitor your dog's coat for parasites or foreign bodies such as thorns, burrs or grass seeds.

MY DOG HAS A SKIN CONDITION AND NEED A SPECIAL SHAMPOO, CAN I BRING THIS FOR YOU TO USE FOR HIS BATH?

Yes. If your vet has recommended a medicated or prescription shampoo please bring it with you, we are happy to use this for your dog's groom.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE FOR MY DOG TO BE GROOMED?

The time taken for a full groom varies depending on breed, size, coat condition and temperament of the dog but generally most groom take between one and three hours. When you bring your dog to the salon I will give you an estimate of how long the groom will take and will phone you when your dog is ready for collection.

CAN YOU DE-MATT MY DOG?

It may be possible to brush out some small matts, however, large matts and those close to the skin would need to be clipped out for the safety and comfort of the dog. The Animal Welfare Act (2006) stipulates that it is an offense to cause animals pain or discomfort, therefore, if there is widespread matting the dog's coat would need to be clipped off. This would be carried out with the full consultation and consent of the owner.

CAN YOU TRIM MY DOG WITHOUT GIVING HIM A BATH?

All dogs having any form of styling or trimming need to have well prepped, clean hair. Cutting a dog's coat without bathing first would result in a poor finish and lead to increased risk of skin reaction as well as damaging our equipment. Therefore, all grooms include bathing prior to clipping, styling or trimming.

MY DOG HAS HAD A BAD EXPERIENCE WITH A PREVIOUS GROOMER AND DOESNT LIKE BEING GROOMED. HE IS ANXIOUS AND REACTIVE WOULD YOU BE ABLE TO GROOM HIM?

We have experience of grooming dogs with anxious or difficult temperaments. It is very important to tell us if your dog is anxious, reactive or has ever shown aggressive behaviour. We will not refuse to groom a reactive dog but the more information we have, the more prepared we will be and so better able to anticipate and deal with difficult behaviour.

For many breeds, regular professional grooming is a life-long requirement to keep them healthy and comfortable as well as looking good, so it's important that they can accept the process. If needed, I can schedule a rehabilitation grooming programme for nervous, sensitive or aggressive dogs, working with the owner to try to get them back to a point where they settle and enjoy the grooming process.

I AM UNABLE TO KEEP MY APPOINTMENT, WHAT SHOULD I DO?

Please let us know as soon as possible if you need to cancel and/or re-schedule your appointment. We require 48 hours notice to allow us to fill the appointment time. Failure to give adequate notice will incur a cancellation fee as stated in our terms and conditions.
